Type K thermocouples (Chromel (Ni-Cr) (+)/Alumel (Ni-Al) (-))
They serve a generic purpose, are affordable and available in a wide variety of models. Measurement range is -200°C to 1260°C. Type K thermocouples have a sensitivity of about 41 µV/°C.
Type J thermocouples (Iron (+)/Constantan (Cu-Ni) (-))
Their measurement range (-40°C to 750 °C) is more limited than type K, therefore these thermocouples are more common than type K models. They are used in older machinery that does not use type K sensors. Type J thermocouples are more affordable and feature a higher sensitivity (51,7 µV/°C), but they cannot be used above 760°C as an abrupt magnetic transformation causes permanent decalibration.
Type T thermocouples (copper (+)/constantan (-))
They have features similar to iron/constantan thermocouples (type J). Type T thermocouples have a sensitivity of 48,2 µV/°C. Their temperature range is -200°C and 400°C.
Type E thermocouples (Chromel (+)/Costantana (-))
Their high sensitivity (68 µV/°C) makes them well suited for low temperature applications (cryogenic use). Additionally, they are non-magnetic.
Type N thermocouples (Nicrosil (Ni-Cr-Si) (+)/Nisil (Ni-Si) (-))
Their measurement range is 650°C and 1250°C. Their stability and resistance to high temperature makes them a great and affordable replacement of platinum thermocouples (types B, R, S) used for high temperature measurements. Designed to be an improved type K, they are becoming more popular.
Type B thermocouples (platinum - 30% rhodium (+)/platinum-6% rhodium (-))
They are suited for high temperatures, up to 1800°C. Due to their unique temperature-voltage ratio, Type B thermocouples produce the same output at 0 °C and 42 °C. The use below 50°C is not advised.
Type R thermocouples (platinum - 13% rhodium (+)/platinum (-))
They are used with high temperatures, up to 1600 °C.
Type S thermocouples (platinum - 10% rhodium (+)/platinum (-))
They are used with high temperatures, up to 1600 °C. Thanks to their unique stability, type S thermocouples are used as the standard of calibration for the melting point of gold (1064.43 °C).
